Vertex Pharmaceuticals will unveil its pivotal Phase 3 data for suzetrigine, a potential non-opioid treatment for moderate-to-severe acute pain, at the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting in October 2024. This marks the first positive Phase 3 data presentation since its announcement in January 2024.
The Phase 3 program, encompassing two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials and a single-arm safety and effectiveness study, investigated suzetrigine’s efficacy following abdominoplasty and bunionectomy surgeries and a diverse range of other pain conditions. The collective findings highlight suzetrigine’s consistent efficacy and safety profile across various acute pain scenarios.
Suzetrigine represents a potential breakthrough in pain management, aiming to address the critical need for non-opioid alternatives with improved efficacy and tolerability compared to existing treatments. The presentation at the ASA meeting offers a significant platform to share these crucial findings with the medical community.
Beyond acute pain, Vertex is pursuing a broad label for suzetrigine in peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP). The company has initiated a Phase 3 program for painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and expects to release results from its Phase 2 study on painful lumbosacral radiculopathy (LSR) in late 2024.

Suzetrigine, an investigational oral medication, selectively inhibits the NaV1.8 sodium channel, which is crucial for transmitting pain signals. This targeted approach aims to deliver effective pain relief without the drawbacks associated with opioids and other current therapies.
Suzetrigine’s favorable benefit-risk profile, demonstrated in multiple clinical trials, has earned it both FDA Fast Track and Breakthrough Therapy designations for acute pain. Currently under FDA priority review, suzetrigine’s target action date for a decision on approval is January 30, 2025.
