Protara Therapeutics announced updated Phase 2 trial results for TARA-002, a cell-based therapy for Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC). The therapy showed promising complete response rates in both BCG-unresponsive (patients who did not respond to standard Bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy) and BCG-naïve patients, with a favorable safety profile. The data were presented at the American Urological Association 2025 Annual Meeting.

These results are potentially practice-changing for NMIBC treatment. Current options for BCG-unresponsive patients are limited and often involve radical cystectomy, a significantly invasive procedure. TARA-002 offers a potential alternative with high efficacy and minimal side effects, potentially preserving bladder function for many patients. The positive results in BCG-naïve patients also suggest TARA-002 could become a first-line treatment option, improving outcomes and minimizing the need for more aggressive interventions later.

In the BCG-unresponsive group, TARA-002 achieved a 100% complete response rate at any time during the study, with rates of 100%, 80%, and 67% at the six, nine, and twelve-month marks respectively. The BCG-naïve cohort saw a 76% complete response rate at any time, and 63%, 63%, and 43% at six, nine, and twelve months respectively. Importantly, no serious treatment-related adverse events were reported. Most side effects were mild and transient, primarily flu-like symptoms or minor bladder irritation.

The continued positive data from the ADVANCED-2 trial strengthens the potential of TARA-002 to significantly alter the NMIBC treatment landscape. With further data expected from a larger patient group by the end of 2025, TARA-002 could move closer to regulatory approval and become a crucial tool for managing this prevalent form of bladder cancer. This could lead to better patient outcomes, reduced healthcare costs associated with invasive procedures, and improved quality of life for individuals facing this challenging diagnosis.
