Video production that once took days now takes hours: ICON’s new AI-directed video engine inside its FIRECREST platform cuts production time by roughly tenfold, the company says. The number matters because site communication has historically been a manual, expensive bottleneck, and ICON runs FIRECREST across more than 500,000 site users who have collectively completed over five million clinical study trainings on the platform.
The engine does not hand sponsors a blank generative AI tool. ICON and sponsor subject-matter experts define the structure, templates, and governance rules upfront; the AI executes within those guardrails. The first application converts study-specific information into site selection videos, letting investigators quickly assess a trial’s requirements before committing to feasibility discussions. All sponsor data stays inside ICON’s environment rather than passing through a third-party model, which addresses the confidentiality concern that has kept regulated trial teams wary of consumer AI video tools.
The strategic bet here is straightforward. WCG’s 2025 Site Challenges Report found that 28% of sites still ranked recruitment and retention as a top concern, even after an improvement from 36% the year before. Sites that do not understand a study’s demands early drop out of feasibility or never activate, and that failure point happens before a single patient is enrolled. A faster, cleaner site selection video does not solve activation wholesale, but it removes one friction point that currently slows the front end of every study. For sponsors managing large portfolios, the ability to generate consistent messaging across multiple protocols without commissioning individual production runs has real cost implications, particularly at ICON’s scale as one of the world’s largest CROs, where efficiencies compound across hundreds of active studies.
The practical test will be whether sponsors adopt the site-selection use case broadly enough to justify expanding the engine into later communication phases, such as protocol amendments and ongoing site training. Activation rate on feasibility-approached sites is the number to watch.
