Spark Biomedical has completed enrollment in its pivotal Phase II clinical trial for a non-invasive neurostimulation treatment for Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS). The trial, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, investigated the efficacy of transcutaneous auricular neurostimulation (tAN) therapy in reducing reliance on opioid treatment for NOWS infants. The study involved infants over 33 weeks gestational age at multiple medical centers and will include two years of post-treatment monitoring for neurodevelopmental outcomes.
This successful trial completion represents a critical advancement in NOWS treatment. Current reliance on opioid-based therapies to manage withdrawal symptoms in newborns carries the risk of prolonged hospital stays and potential long-term developmental concerns. A non-invasive, drug-free alternative like tAN therapy offers the potential to significantly improve the care standard for these vulnerable infants, leading to quicker recovery times and potentially minimizing long-term health risks. This could translate to reduced healthcare costs and improved family well-being.
The SPROUT trial builds on the FDA Breakthrough Device Designation previously granted to Spark Biomedical’s tAN technology. The trial assessed the combined effect of tAN therapy and standard morphine treatment on the time required for infants to reach medical readiness for discharge. Data analysis is currently underway, and the results will be crucial for the next step: submitting the Sparrow Fledgling device to the FDA for approval.
The successful completion of this trial represents a significant milestone for Spark Biomedical and a potential turning point in NOWS management. Positive trial results could pave the way for a much-needed, non-invasive treatment option, offering a brighter start for thousands of newborns affected by opioid exposure annually. This also positions Spark Biomedical as a leader in developing innovative bioelectronic medicine for a vulnerable patient population, creating potential for future growth and development in the field.
