Emory University and Micron Biomedical have launched the first clinical trial of a rotavirus vaccine, CC24, delivered via dissolvable microarray patch technology. This trial, sponsored by the CDC, represents the first CDC-sponsored evaluation of any drug or vaccine delivered using this method. The vaccine aims to address the limitations of current oral rotavirus vaccines, which are less effective in low- and middle-income countries where the disease is most prevalent.

This trial is crucial because it offers a potential solution to a significant global health challenge: effectively vaccinating children against rotavirus in resource-limited settings. A successful outcome could drastically reduce childhood mortality from diarrheal diseases in these regions. The data generated from this trial will pave the way for subsequent studies in children, the target population. This trial builds on prior Emory research on self-administered influenza vaccines using Micron’s technology, and studies involving other diseases like measles and rubella.
