Orchestra BioMed Holdings announced positive data from a retrospective analysis of its MODERATO II study, demonstrating that atrioventricular interval modulation (AVIM) therapy improved echocardiographic markers of diastolic dysfunction in hypertensive patients. Diastolic dysfunction is a key factor in the development of heart failure, and hypertension is its leading cause, making these findings particularly relevant for older patients prone to both conditions. The data was presented at the Technology and Heart Failure Therapeutics 2025 Conference.
This news is important because it suggests AVIM therapy may address a significant unmet need in managing hypertension and preventing heart failure. The analysis, conducted on a subset of MODERATO II study participants, showed that six months of AVIM therapy significantly reduced both office and ambulatory systolic blood pressure in patients with diastolic dysfunction. Furthermore, AVIM therapy improved key echocardiographic measures, including e’ and E/A, indicating enhanced myocardial relaxation and improved passive filling of the left ventricle. These improvements occurred despite the reduced filling time associated with AVIM therapy, and without significant changes in left atrial size.
These findings bolster the potential of AVIM therapy as a valuable tool in managing hypertension and its associated cardiovascular risks, particularly in patients with diastolic dysfunction. The ongoing BACKBEAT global pivotal study will provide further insights into the efficacy and safety of AVIM therapy in a larger, randomized controlled setting. Positive results from this study could significantly impact the treatment paradigm for hypertension and heart failure prevention, potentially leading to earlier intervention and improved outcomes for patients at risk.
