Bonafide Health’s fifth annual State of Menopause Study reveals that women aged 40-49 are significantly impacted by perimenopause, experiencing heightened symptom disruption and negative feelings about this life stage. The study, surveying 2,040 women aged 40-64 in the U.S., highlights the ongoing struggle for women to find reliable information and effective, non-hormonal treatment options. Despite slight increases in workplace accommodations, younger women report significant negative impacts on their work lives due to symptoms.
This research is crucial for the women’s health industry because it underscores the unmet needs of a large demographic. The findings expose a significant gap in accessible, reliable information and effective treatments, particularly for younger women entering perimenopause. This knowledge gap impacts not only individual well-being but also productivity and workplace dynamics. The study highlights the need for improved education and support, driving demand for evidence-based, non-hormonal solutions. It also emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to be better equipped to recognize and address perimenopause symptoms, avoiding misdiagnosis and offering appropriate support.
The study’s key findings indicate that while awareness of menopause is increasing, many women still feel unprepared for perimenopause symptoms. A majority of women are self-educating, increasingly turning to social media platforms like TikTok. However, this reliance on potentially unreliable sources, coupled with the misleading marketing of unproven products (“menowashing”), complicates the search for effective relief. This has led to an increasing interest in clinically-backed, non-prescription options available at retail locations, alongside a growing adoption of digital health technologies for symptom tracking and management, especially among younger women.
The trends identified in this study signal a significant shift in how women approach menopause management. The growing demand for accessible, evidence-based, non-hormonal solutions, along with the increasing use of technology for symptom tracking and management, creates opportunities for companies like Bonafide Health and other players in the women’s health market. This also presents a challenge to healthcare providers to adapt to these changing needs and become better informed resources. The industry must respond with innovative solutions and reliable information to better support women through this significant life transition.
