Theratechnologies presented two posters at the 19th Annual American Conference for the Treatment of HIV (ACTHIV 2025), focusing on excess visceral abdominal fat (EVAF) in people with HIV (PWH). One study linked EVAF to reduced muscle quality in aging PWH, while the other showcased the successful combination of tesamorelin and GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy in reducing EVAF and obesity. Both studies build upon existing research into the metabolic complexities faced by PWH.
These findings are crucial for advancing HIV care as the population ages. The link between EVAF and decreased muscle quality underscores the need for targeted interventions to mitigate age-related functional decline. The positive results from the tesamorelin/GLP-1 RA combination therapy offer a potential new treatment strategy for addressing both EVAF and obesity in this population. This is particularly important as these metabolic issues can contribute to other serious health problems.
The VAMOS study analysis, involving 170 participants, revealed a significant correlation between increased visceral fat and reduced skeletal muscle quality, independent of BMI. The case series involving seven PWH demonstrated that the combination therapy led to substantial reductions in weight, BMI, and waist circumference. Most patients in the case series achieved their metabolic goals and continue on the combined therapy.
This research points towards a more nuanced understanding of metabolic health in PWH. The identification of EVAF as a key factor in age-related decline, and the promising results of combination therapy, may lead to improved treatment protocols and better health outcomes for people aging with HIV. It suggests a shift towards more personalized and effective metabolic management strategies.
